At this point ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb bellowed out: “See how they conspire to usurp from us our rightful authority!” The representative of the anṣār concluded his speech, and in the meantime ʿUmar’s fury had reached a fever pitch. He rose to pour out his rage upon the crowd, challenging all comers to a duel to the death on the spot, but Abū Bakr stayed him, sat him down, and spoke gently in his stead:
